Harnessing the Healing Power of Nuclear Energy

Isogen works with nuclear power operators to enable the production of life-saving medical isotopes.

– Powering Nuclear Medicine

Isogen is a joint venture between Framatome and Kinectrics, whose mission is to enable the use of CANDU reactors to produce the medical isotopes needed to treat and diagnose patients with serious diseases world-wide.

Isogen’s enabling partnership with Bruce Power allows us to produce the world’s largest and most reliable supply of lifesaving, short-lived, medical isotopes.

– Advantages

Isogen’s Technology and Services

Isogen is deploying patented technology that leverages existing power reactors to produce medical isotopes without interrupting or compromising the generation of clean, affordable, nuclear energy.

Using our technology, Isogen provides irradiation services to isotope processors and radiopharmaceutical manufacturers.  We work with our customers to reliably supply medical isotopes to meet their ongoing needs and future growth.

World-Class Reliability

Isogen has access to the largest fleet of CANDU reactors worldwide. The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station operates a fleet of 8 CANDU reactors, providing unparalleled redundancy and capacity. Isogen and Bruce Power provide assurance to physicians and patients around the globe that their source of life-saving medical isotopes is safe and secure.

Zero-Waste Technology

The production of isotopes using Isogen’s technology does not generate nuclear waste, as all materials used in production are either for the treatment of patients, or recycled and reused to produce more isotopes.

Scalable Isotope Production

Isogen’s technology is scalable to meet growing market demands for isotopes such as Lu-177.  It is adaptable to produce many different isotopes needed for the treatment and diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.

The Target

A stable isotope, such as Ytterbium-176 is sealed in protective carriers called “targets” and placed within the reactor core for several weeks.

Irradiation

The medical isotope, Lutetium-177, is made by irradiating stable isotope Ytterbium-176 with high-flux neutrons.

Transportation

Irradiated targets are transported to an isotope processor who extracts the Lutetium-177 from the Ytterbium-176 such that it may be used for drug preparation.

2000 patient treatments

Each shipment of Lutetium-177 may contain enough medical isotope for the treatment of 2,000 patients.
